Barry has practised yoga for over 6 years, focusing mainly on hot yoga. He began attending hot yoga classes following a skiing accident in 2007 which left him with a badly damaged right knee, and found regular practice very beneficial, not only for his knee but for his overall well-being. He completed a 6 month course with Yoga Therapy Ireland and went on to complete an intensive 200 hour one-to-one training course with the founder of Dynamic Hot Yoga, Stuart Tranter. Stuart is a devoted teacher with 12 years of experience and has taught several thousand students in England, Europe and India. His teachers include Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India (founder of Astanga Yoga in 1930), Sharath Ranagaswamy (grandson of Gurugi), Gingi Lee (Sangam Yoga London), Naranni (direct student of Sivananda), Richard Wald (direct student of BKS Iyengar).
Barry then travelled to Las Vegas to study Inferno Hot Pilates. Inferno Hot Pilates is a training system which combines Pilates principles with High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and is performed in a room heated to 35ºC and 40% humidity. It is an intense, full body workout designed to strengthen muscles, increase flexibility and improve overall health. Classes last 60 minutes.
Barry has been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since December 2017 with SBG Ballina. It is here that he got talking to Steve Gamez, a training partner at SBG & discussed the idea of running BJJ classes at Bonco Wellness in Claremorris. At a Roger Gracie seminar in Athlone in February 2018 they decided to put a plan in place & get these classes up & running. Jiu Jitsu classes started in April 2018. Both Barry & Steve continue to train out of SBG Ballina.
Our BJJ Coach:- Stephen A. Gamez trained for 5 years in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Currently a Blue Belt from Stronghold Athletics/ Team Shawn Hammonds in Madison, Wisconsin USA. While serving in the military he had the privilege to train under various clubs, trams & instructors.
